My friend is in the hospital. This friend has had more than her fair share of difficulties in life. I won't go into them all, but we frequently ask ourselves and each other, what is going on? Why her God? Isn't enough enough? When will you just pour out your blessings on her instead of allowing all this hardship?
I hate seeing friends go through difficult times. I don't like it when I go through difficult times. But there is a song which has become my most recent favorite. It expresses so many truths and it speaks to those same questions. If you have not heard it, please check it out on youtube. This is a link to a brief youtube video of the author, Laura Storey, explaining the background behind the song.
http://youtu.be/gjB2skJi2co Laura explains that many times we have the wrong idea of what blessing is. Sometimes really good things come from situations that don't seem good at all. (See my previous blog about brokenness!)
The Bible says in James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." So we need to turn our whining around. Lets focus on what good could come out of suffering. Ask yourself, "what if?"
Blessings - by Laura Storey
We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things
'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough
All the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe
'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not, this is not our home
It's not our home
'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching(s) of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise
